Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has been designated as the Organizing Institute for GATE 2009.The overall coordination and responsibility of conducting GATE 2009 would lie with IIT Roorkee. The important dates as per GATE-2009 notifications are as below: Commencement of GATE-2009 forms: Last date of issue of GATE-2009 forms: Last date for submission of GATE-2009 forms: Date of GATE-2009 exam: 08th February 2009 (Sunday) 1. From GATE 2009, the validity of GATE score will be ONE YEAR only. 2. Papers merged from GATE 2009 onwards: 3. Papers discontinued from GATE 2009 onwards Change in Structure of GATE Papers: In GATE 2009 examination, papers will be of 3 hours duration and will contain 60 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. The question paper will consist of only multiple choice objective questions. Each question will have four choices for the answer. Only one choice will be correct. Candidates have to mark the correct choice on an Optical Response Sheet (ORS) by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question. There will be 1/3rd negative marking for wrong answers Change specific to the Structure of Geology and Geophysics (GG) paper in GATE 2009: Part A will be common to both Geology and Geophysics candidates. It will consist of 20 questions, each of 1 mark. Part B will contain two sections: Section 1 (Geology) and Section 2 (Geophysics).

What is new in GATE 2009?
You must be wondering how much GATE-2009 is different from previous years. Well there are quite a few:
With effect from GATE 2009, Information Technology (IT) paper is merged into Computer Science (CS) paper. There is no separate IT Paper for GATE 2009. The name and code of the merged paper will be Computer Science and Information Technology (CS).
Computational Science and Electrical Sciences sections have been discontinued in XE paper with effect from GATE 2009.
Following changes in GATE structure is universal to all papers:
The GG paper will consist of two parts: Part A and Part B with total of 60 questions carrying 100 marks.
Geology candidates will attempt questions in Section 1 only.
Geophysics candidates will attempt questions in Section 2 only.
Each of the sections (Section 1 & Section 2) in Part B will consist of 40 questions; all will be 2-mark question.
GATE 2009 new Examination centres:
Bagalkot in Karnakata state.
Alwar, Sikar and Bikaneer in Rajasthan state.
